Radio Signals in Space
Whilst on the ISS Richard used Ham radio to talk to schools and other people. Here he talks about being able to communicate with people on Earth using Radio signals. Sound waves require air for them to travel, but radio waves can travel without using the vibrations of the air. This means that they can be transmitted into space. Radio waves are a form of electromagnetic (EM) radiation. Another example of EM radiation is the light we see with our eyes. The different is the length of the wave. Radio wavelengths are much longer than the light we can see.
